    Abstract :

The popularity of wireless sensor network (WSN) have increased tremendously due to the vast potential of the sensor networks to connect the physical world and with virtual world. Since these devices rely on battery power and may be placed in hostile environments, replacing them becomes a tedious task. Thus improving the lifetime of these networks becomes important. This paper provides methods for clustering and cluster head selection in WSN to improve energy efficiency. It uses an Ad-Hoc on Demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocol for routing. AODV is compared with Destination sequenced distance vector (DSDV) by considering average energy consumption and throughput. In AODV, graphs are plotted by considering four performance metrics: average energy consumption, throughput, delay, packet delivery ratio (PDR). AODV has been shown efficient protocol than DSDV.
