    Abstract :

Magnetically Assisted Abrasive Finishing (MAAF) processes are most suitable for obtaining quality finish on metallic and non-metallic surfaces. The manufacturing techniques for preparing magnetic abrasives are time consuming and complicated. Microwave heating is one of the most commonly used appliances for heating purposes in kitchen applications. But recently, microwave has started using as a non conventional heating source in modern industrial level applications. The most common heating application in non conventional heating is microwave sintering of ceramic materials, because it is rapid and sintering is done within an instant period of time about 4 % of the conventional sintering time. The main aim of the present work is to prepare magnetic abrasives by this microwave sintering technology, which are further used in magnetic finishing processes. The magnetic abrasives are further compared in terms of surface finish and material removal from work piece surface. Magnetic abrasives are prepared by mixing iron powder (ferromagnetic component) and Al2O3/SiC (abrasive component), sintered by microwave sintering and then crushed. Brass and SS-304 material pipes have been used as workpiece. Based upon the results of the study, SiC-iron shown better performance than Al2O3-iron powder combination.
